William ROBERTS was born ~1810 in Glamorgan, Sth Wales (according to his son William Cole's birth certificate, #12 reg 1856). He married Eliza Ann COLE ~1840 (her death cert 1899 stated married at age 22 years in Melbourne #9373). There is an index entry for a William Roberts m Eliza Coles in 1843 #4731 (which may or may not be the same marriage). I have not yet ascertained when William came to Australia. Again, from William Cole's birth certificate (#12 reg 1856) there were 5 or 6 elder children: Ann 12, Elizabeth 10, Mary 8, James 5, Thomas 2, William - (perhaps William = William Cole?). From the place of birth of these children listed in the index it would seem that the family lived near Melbourne until ~1854 (Ann, Elizabeth, James, Thomas all recorded as Church of England, parish of St James, Melbourne) and then moved to Moorabbin from 1855/6 as that is the birthplace of later children: Eliza Ann ~1857, Lilias ~1859, and Margaret ~1861. Because of the sheer number of William Roberts and lack of other information, it is difficult to pick which entry in the index relates to the above. Most likely is that William died in 1870, age 59 (#3735). His wife, Eliza Ann COLE died in Moonee Ponds on 12 Aug 1899 aged 81 years (#9373). |
